Is the concept of “how to be handy” a lost skill? Our Public Relations partner recently forwarded an article published in the New York Post entitled, “Millennial Dads have pathetic DIY skills compared to Baby Boomers.” I was surprised to read that of 1,000 surveyed millennial Dads, over half said they preferred to call a professional for a DIY task. While that sounds expensive to me, you do have the ability to pick and choose when and what DIY projects you want to do.
But what about emergency DIY situations? The article went on to talk about how unprepared millennials were compared to their Dads when it came to emergency scenarios. This is the crises that happens when water is suddenly pouring into your kitchen on a Sunday night, and calling a professional is going to be $$$$ – yikes!
And besides the lack of know-how, most of these millennial Dads don’t have much in their tool-box, if they even have a tool-box. A survey by Alarm.com reported:
- 49% don’t own a cordless drill
- 46% don’t own a stepladder
- 38% don’t own screwdrivers
- 32% don’t own a hammer
Why is it that so many people don’t know how to be handy? The article surmised that advances in technology make some DIY out-of-reach. That can certainly be true when thinking about automobiles. And whether due to budgetary constraints or liability concerns, a lot of people have been left behind on basic handiness skills since many schools no longer offer “shop” classes.
This got us thinking.
It’s not just millennials. It’s not just Dads. And it’s not just men.
There are some basic things that just about everyone should know how to do around the house.
And so the MO2H makerspace is going to help fill the gap. We are now offering a two-hour “How to be Handy” class. People will learn about basic tools, what they do, and how to use them. We’ll also teach some basic household tasks, go over some common household maintenance, and what to do in case of an emergency. And people aren’t going home empty-handed; we’re providing a stocked and sturdy tool-kit for people to take home!
Who has pathetic DIY skills? Not you! You know how to be handy!
